Celebrating An Incredible Career: John White
After an extraordinary career that has spanned hands-on engineering, technical innovation, and leadership across multiple engineering and management roles, John White has spent the past four years shaping Elexon Electronics as Business Development Manager, championing projects from initial design concepts through to full-scale production.
John’s ability to translate complex technical requirements into practical manufacturing solutions has been pivotal in helping clients bring ideas to life with precision and quality. Combining decades of experience in electronics, RF engineering, and operations with a deep understanding of commercial needs, John has bridged the gap between innovation and execution. As he embarks on his next chapter, we celebrate his remarkable contributions to advancing Australian electronics design and manufacturing and the lasting impact he has made on Elexon and its customers. We sat down with John to reflect on his incredible journey and hear his insights as he transitions into an exciting new chapter.
After such an amazing career spanning on the tools engineering and various management roles, how did your past experiences contribute to your BDM role at Elexon Electronics for the past four years?
My past experience gave me the tools to connect Elexon Electronics’ capabilities with our customers’ requirements. Most of my time is spent understanding what each client truly needs, identifying their challenges and delivering tailored solutions with the rest of the team. Having worked across technical, commercial, and operational roles, I bring a full 360-degree view of the manufacturing industry. I’ve experienced both small businesses and large corporations, including one with over 100,000 employees. That breadth of experience helps me guide customers through the entire process, from design to production.
What first piqued your interest in working in this industry?
I’ve always been fascinated by electronics. That early interest grew into software development and, eventually, firmware, though back then, the term “firmware” didn’t even exist! This passion led me to study electronics and software development at university, graduating as an Electronics Engineer in 1991. My first role was in telemetry, transmitting data in water supply and wastewater applications, where I worked on radio networks to connect pumps and assets. I started in software but soon moved into radio electronics design and became an RF engineer, a role I found incredibly rewarding and continued for most of my career.
In your opinion, what has been the biggest change in industry over the years?
The most significant change has been connectivity, moving from wired to wireless systems. That shift has enabled countless technologies, improved data sharing, and boosted efficiency. Looking ahead, AI will augment these processes even further, but connectivity will remain essential to keeping everything working seamlessly.
What has had the biggest impact?
Several things stand out, but the evolution of computing was the first major leap. I started in a world where computers were very different to what they are today, and now they’re part of everyday life. Connectivity has been the driving force behind today’s innovations, supported by advancements in electronics. Something Elexon Electronics is proud to be a part of, Elexon plays a key role in connectivity by delivering world-class electronics design and manufacturing services.
What will you miss the most about this role?
It’s always the people, the key to any successful business is the people who help drive business growth, and solve day to day problems, the team at Elexon has been really great. We have a few inside jokes such as team paparazzi, I’ll miss that.
What projects are you most proud of having worked on in your career?
I’ve worked on many interesting projects, most of them industrial. One achievement I’m particularly proud of is manufacturing electronics in Australia for export to overseas markets. That’s a big win for local capability, for our Brendale business to be on the global stage.
What advice would you give to aspiring engineers?
Don’t let your degree pigeonhole you into a work direction, because throughout my life, I’ve gone from software to electronics to RF, to product development for operations, electronic product development, to finance, back to electronics manufacturing. The skills are transferable.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Love what you do, it makes all the difference. I’m glad I followed something that I love.
What next?!
A little bit of travel with a focus on Australia, seeing more of Australia. Enjoying hobbies such as motor racing, and spending time with family.

I have very much enjoyed my time with Elexon Electronics as it has allowed me to come back to my electronics design roots, which has been refreshing.

While it’s important to enjoy the work you are doing, it’s also the people your work with that make overcoming the day to day challenges so much easier and the people in Elexon are its greatest strength. This was very evident in the way everyone in Elexon pulled together to support each other and in the fire recovery.
Elexon services a diverse range of customers in the commercial, industrial and defence industries. Working with these customers to support their manufacturing needs and developing innovative solutions, I have enjoyed very much and thank for their support.
